User manual

We in the Joule team wish you a great e-bike experience! To help you get started, we have created a user manual adapted to the electric bike you subscribe to.

If you have any questions that are not answered here, please contact us at hei@joule.no.

The most important details:

  • For the theft insurance to apply, the e-bike frame must be locked and to a fixed unit
  • Do not charge the battery at night, or for long periods without supervision
  • To limit damage to the frame, the lock must be attached tightly to the seat post
  • To prevent the gears and brakes from being effected, we recommend regularly washing the e-bike with water and a cloth (only)
  • Do not use high pressure washers on the e-bike, it can  destroy the mechanics

How to use the electric bike?

1. Switch on the bike

Switch on the bike by pressing the on/off switch at the front of the panel to the left of the handlebars. The bike must be switched on before you start riding. While riding, you can regulate the desired engine power by pressing "up" or "down" on the panel.

2. Check that the bike has electricity
You can check that the bike is charged by turning on the bike. The battery percentage is then shown at the top of the display.

3. Remove the battery
When removing the battery to charge it inside, do as follows:

  • Remove the lid in front of the battery
  • Turn (and hold) the key to the left. After you turn the key, the battery will fall slightly out.
  • Press down the gray spring on top of the battery. The battery will now fall to the ground, so be ready to catch it!

4. Charging the battery outside the bicycle
Once you have removed the battery, it can be charged with the charger you received together with the e-bike.

The charger must first be attached to the battery, and then be attached to the power outlet. The order is important, as the battery can go into protection mode if the power outlet is attached first.

Charging time can vary from two to four hours depending on how full the battery is.

Your safety is important to us. Here are some reminders regarding battery-safety.

  • Do not start charging the battery if it is visibly damaged.
  • Stop charging immediately if you experience a strange smell or see smoke.
  • Keep an eye on the battery, and do not charge it while you sleep.
  • Avoid damaging the battery by allowing it to fall to the floor of taking hits.
  • Do not place the battery in the sun while charging.
  • Do not cover the battery and charger, or place objects near them. Be vigilant about flammable materials.
  • Do not allow the battery to come in contact with water or open fire.
  • Keep the battery away from children and pets.
  • Do not use the battery or charger for other gadgets.
  • In the unlikely event that the battery catches fire, do not attempt to extinguish the fire with water. Evacuate the area and contact emergency services immediately.
  • When you are at home, store the battery in the bike. When you are out, take the battery with you to avoid theft.

5. Using the gears
Although this is an electric bike, it is important that you use the gears. You use the gears in the same way as when you ride a normal bike. This means that when you approach a hill, it's a good idea to engage a lighter gear.

How to park and store the e-bike

In order to be covered by our insurance agreement, it is essential that you park the bicycle using an insurance-approved bicycle lock.

E-bike theft is unfortunately very common, and by following these guidelines you reduce the likelihood of theft considerably. If you have followed our insurance terms and guidelines for parking, you will be covered by the insurance in the event of theft, but we cannot, however, guarantee that you will get a new bike immediately.

Guidelines for parking the bicycle

Bicycle lock: It is important to use the supplied bicycle lock every time the bicycle is parked. Thread the lock through both the bicycle frame, if possible through one of the wheels, and around a fixed structure (lamp post, bicycle rack etc.).

Battery: If you park on public land (on the street, in the city and other places without access control) without having the bicycle under supervision, we recommend that the battery be removed immediately. If someone steals the battery while the bike is parked unattended, it is not necessarily covered by the theft insurance for the bike, and you (as the renter) will in these cases be responsible for replacing the battery.

The keys to the battery are in the bag when you receive the bike. It can be useful to separate these two keys so that you have a spare if you lose one of the keys. Also remember to take the keys out of the lock when you park the bike.

Parking at night: Parking the bicycle on public land (in the city, street etc.) overnight should be avoided, as the probability of theft increases considerably. We recommend keeping the bike locked up at night if possible (for example in a shed, closed backyard or in an apartment).

If you store the bicycle in a shed, there are requirements for the quality of the lock for the theft insurance to be valid. If you are in doubt, we also recommend locking the e-bike with the bike lock.

The terms of the theft insurance are described in detail under Rental terms and conditions.

How to take care of the electric bike?

1. Air in the tires
One of the most important things you do to take good care of your bike is to have enough air in the tires. For frequent use, we recommend checking the tires often. On average, you should expect to fill the tires with air around once a month. Recommended pressure for the supplied tires is 3.5 bar and maximum pressure is 4 bar.

2. Wash the bike

The e-bike will last longer if it is kept clean. For a normal wash, you can go a long way with water and a cloth, and if it is particularly dirty, you can use a little Zalo and a regular scrubbing brush. The garden hose can also be used, but do not use high pressure washers as it can force water into the electronics, ball bearings and motor.

How to cycle safely in traffic?

We recommend that all our subscribers wear a helmet and follow the Norwegian traffic rules.

Have a good ride!

We hope you enjoy your e-bike!
